What is the Best Martial Art for Self Defense?

Are you trying to figure out which is the best martial art for self defense? As you probably know, there is a lot of confusing information out there about martial arts and self defense. There seem to be hundreds, if not thousands of different types of martial arts.

Best Martial Art

  • Karate
  • Kung fu
  • Tai chi
  • Tae kwon do
  • Do rey me...

Just to name a few!

Not to mention the fact that there are at least a dozen different forms of Kung Fu alone! It’s enough to make your head spin!

Which one is really the best martial art for self defense? Which one is really going to save you in a street fight? Which one addresses your needs and concerns regarding effectiveness, adaptability, competition, your age, and your physical condition?

If you have been having a hard time trying to figure out all of the different types of martial arts, you’re not alone. I was also confused when I started. Even the most experienced martial artists can’t keep them all straight. If you are having trouble choosing the best martial art for self defense, I’m going to make it easy for you. There is really only one thing you need to remember...

It’s All Jujitsu!

That’s right. It’s all pretty much the same thing. Now, I don’t doubt that most martial artists will argue with that statement; especially those who practice different types of martial arts other than Jujitsu. It’s a very controversial statement. But, as you will soon see, I like to be controversial. So let me finish my explanation and maybe you will begin to see my point.

Besides...

Why would you want to stick around and read my BLOG if all I had to say was the same old stuff you see on every other website talking about what is the best martial art for self defense? Everyone else rants about how their special form of HOP Chop Sooey is better than his form of POP Chop Sooey.

You’ve probably seen the ads...

best martial art

"My name is Igor and I can crush the heads of ten men all at once! Everyone fears me! In only 3 days I will teach you how to kill an entire army!"

If you haven’t seen ads like that, believe me, they’re out there. And that is only a slight exaggeration of some I have actually seen. But is that believable? Is it realistic? Do you need to kill an entire army? I don’t think so.

On the other hand, there are many 'self defense advisors' who try to be so politically correct that when you ask them what is the best martial art, all you get out of them is an answer like, “No martial art is better than any other type of martial art. It all depends on how you train.” That doesn’t sound like much of a vote of confidence for any style, does it?

So, how are you supposed to make a decision with that kind of non-information? It seems that every martial art is the best martial art, or none is better than another... Which is it, for crying out loud?!

That is why I am stepping forward to clear the air once and for all. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says about different types of martial arts...

It’s All Jujitsu!

First of all, let’s start with the word 'Jujitsu' itself. What's with all the different spellings?

  • Ju-jitsu
  • Jiu jitsu
  • Jujutsu

What’s that all about? Are they different types of martial arts? What’s the difference?

Nothing! No difference at all. It simply comes from mispronunciation or mistranslation from one language to another. No big deal. It happens all the time.

It’s All Jujitsu!

[Side Note: A link is provided at the end if you want to learn more about the correct spelling of the word. But, please finish reading this page first.]

Let’s really open up the can of worms now. Stick with me! It’s going to get good!

What about the different forms of JAPANESE martial arts besides Jujitsu? That would also include:

  • Karate
  • Judo
  • Aikido

Believe it or not, It’s All Jujitsu!

Even a cursory investigation of each of those forms of ‘empty hand’ self defense will prove that I am right. None of them, in their present form, are more than about a hundred years old, and it is well documented, in direct writings of the men who developed them, that they were developed from JUJITSU, a much older martial art. Go ahead, look it up for yourself.

[Side Note: Links are provided at the end of this page, or click on the "Black Belt" button at the top, left of this page, if you want to learn more about the history, development, and comparison of jujitsu to other types of martial arts. Then, you can make your own decision which is the best martial art.]

"But, I have observed each of them," you say. "Karate, judo, aikido and jujitsu all appear to be different types of martial arts!"

Yeah, so? Lot’s of kids don’t look anything like their parents. That doesn’t prove anything.

Each 'founder' of the above mentioned styles had a reason to want to specialize in a limited area of the very broad martial art that is Jujitsu. If you are interested, you can investigate their motives by following the suggested links. But for now, the point I am making is that just because it is a limited study area of Jujitsu, still...

It’s All Jujitsu!

Others will argue the point until they’re blue in the face, but I will win that argument every time. Like I said, it’s all well documented.

OK. Where do we stand? No matter what you call it, no matter how you spell it, or pronounce it; ju-jitsu, jiu jitsu, jujutsu...

best martial art It’s All Jujitsu!

If it is ANY form of 'unarmed' Japanese self defense...

It's All Jujitsu!

And yes, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is just another specialized form of Japanese Jujitsu. That fact is also well documented.

Are you with me so far? Hold on. We're getting to the good part!

I already know what your're going to say...

"There are other types of martial arts from all over Asia, not just Japan! What about all those other martial arts? Those from China, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines! What about them?"

You mean martial arts such as:

  • Kung fu
  • Wu shu
  • Chin na
  • Tae kwon do
  • Hapkido
  • Tang soo do
  • Muay Thai

and the list goes on, and on, and on...

What do you think I’m going to say? Yep, ...

It’s All Jujitsu!

OK. I admit this one is going to be a lot harder to prove. But if I still have your attention, perhaps you will indulge me a bit further. You just may agree with my convoluted logic. Then again, you may not! But that’s alright, I don’t expect to convince everyone. If I could do that, I’d get into politics.

So, where were we? Ah, yes. My crazy assertion that in regard to ALL Asian martial arts, in fact, all ‘empty hand’ forms of self defense worldwide...

It’s All Jujitsu!

I am not foolish enough to try and convince you that the Japanese invented all the different types of martial arts. In fact, historically speaking, the Japanese have never really been known for inventing ANYTHING. Their culture, art, even their writing is largely copied from other societies. All of the basic techniques that form the core of Jujitsu probably migrated there from the mainland like everything else; specifically from China and Korea.

However, even though they don’t invent much, everyone has to agree that the Japanese have an uncanny ability to take someone else’s invention and then PERFECT it.

Did the Japanese invent television? No, but where do the best TV’s come from? Did they invent automobiles? Of course not! But many would argue that the best cars now come from Japan.

So, what’s my point?

All those other types of martial arts, or at least the skills that make them up, were at some point introduced into Japan (another documented fact). There, the clever Japanese studied them and tested them through thousands of years of warfare. The fierce Samurai warriors discarded what didn’t work and kept only the very best martial arts techniques. Finally, they molded it into the deadliest, most effective martial art the world has ever seen. Jujitsu!

Now you can see, It’s All Jujitsu! Or at least...

types of martial arts It’s all in Jujitsu!

And that is why Jujitsu is the best martial art for self defense.

That’s also what makes it so versatile. It has everything in it! That is why Jujitsu is the world’s most adaptable martial art. It can be used in many different ways, by anyone, for almost any situation.

Jujitsu retains only the very best martial art techniques that have been proven to work in real combat situations!

It doesn’t matter if you want to learn basic street-smart self defense, military special forces hand-to-hand combat, or Ultimate Fighting ChampionshipTM style tournament competition...

You don't need to be confused by all the different types of martial arts.
