1. Latest Budoshin News

Budoshin Yudanshakai Summer Camp was held August 15 - 17. We had a fairly good turnout, and everyone had a good time.

I taught sessions on improving basic throws and submissions. Hopefully there will be some pictures and video available soon. I will keep you posted.

If you missed it, that's too bad. But don't worry, we have plenty of great training opportunities still to come in 2008. Be sure to check out the "EVENTS" section below for more information.

Now, on to the good stuff...

2. Self-defense Tip of the Month

Stick to the Basics!

I know I sound like a broken record (for those of you who remember what a record is), but I must stress over and over again:

"Complicated techniques composed of many intricate movements are too difficult to remember and perform when you are under the extreme stress of an assault."

You must place your trust in the most simple, basic and proven techniques when faced with a real attack. True self-defense training teaches the student to focus on basic movements with a single-minded purpose.

Yes, we all like the flashy moves we practice in the dojo. They are fun to learn and they look really cool. But when you are facing a REAL threat, you MUST stick with the basics. When you are attacked, you will only have a few seconds in which to react and your actions must be swift and decisive.

That is why immediate strikes to the eyes, nose or chin of an attacker are so effective. They will not knock him out, or even knock him down, but it will immediately put him on the defensive side, rather than the offensive side. The sooner you make your attacker realize he has made a mistake by attacking the wrong person, the sooner you get out of a bad situation.

So, now that you know this basic principle of self-defense, let's see it in action...

3. Jujitsu Technique of the Month: Shoulder-lock Takedown

A front choke is a very dangerous attack if your opponent is able to apply enough pressure to damage your windpipe. Fortunately, you will usually have time to prevent this from happening, but only if you act quickly and decisively.

In this variation of the Shoulder-lock Takedown, I have added an upward elbow strike to distract the attacker and to set up the shoulder lock. But even with the addition of the strike, it is still basically only TWO steps; Strike & Lock. That makes this version of the jujitsu shoulder-lock takedown easy to learn, easy to remember, and easy to execute in a pressure situation. [The submission is optional, depending on whether you NEED to control the opponent, or just escape the scene.]

So, go watch the video and read the full explanation of this technique. Click on the Title Link, above, or copy and paste the following address into your browser:
